I would I tell you. The funniest with him was " L´Emmerdeure " and the good actor " Lino Ventura " Director Francis Veber ( Le Dinner des Cons & Le Placard..and more )
Follow Ups:
...when he directed a remake of it, known as "Buddy Buddy", with Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattau: good actors, lots of money, but... that freshness was lost in translation...Glad that you liked it as I did.

- Stalag
- Fedora
- The Front Page
_ His Sherlock was a big deception too, he fails to capture the spirit.
- Avanti avanti was luke warm.
For all the rest I agree more than a just agreeing!
He was a schoolar of Great Lubitsch.PS: It was lost. But Mr. Wilder had a scheme and always stick to it. Mr. Lubitsch
...especially "Avanti"!And, if we are not here for fun, what´s the purpose? I am for fun, mon vieux!

Avanti sticks too much in the " Seventies " and that is always wrong to be too much " melanges " in your time. But it has a certain charm, beautiful boobs, and there is bourgoie revolution in the air.
Only for fun, bien sure !
It was ironie...
And who am I to argue with the woman's intuition!! :-) You - being French - should know that! The L'Emmerdeure I think I saw... it is called Pain in the A... here... but will double check.
Hehe...But this film has a cult statue in France...J. Brel a bad actor but what an artist when it comes to song writing and interpretation!
I cherish him very much.
Pain in the A...would fit....
I checked - I indeed remember the Pain in the A... movie quite well - it was hilarious!
