If I may interject into your conversation -
These two films play like contemporary Hollywood comedies in French. Swap the title, language, cast some 2nd tier American actors and you get a perfect template.
Veber has been spending too much time on the West Coast. And it shows.

They were not terrible movies, but remembering Veber's comedies of the yesteryear, these 2 couldn't compete in the same league.

His earlier works like The Tall Blond Man, and the Goat were funny, but I would not say the Closet and Dinner Game were any lower on laughing scale than the Tall Man. If anything they are more refined, with better dialogue. The dialogue in the Tall Man was quite crude by comparisson.Of course I only heard these in translation... the Tall Man, actually, in Russian dubbing, which usually was quite good.

I see it there for $10... used. $13 new. I suspect that's what I paid.
I wouldn't imagine something like that.
There is an undeniable elegance, lightness and naturalness to those commedies, that you usually don't find the in the US productions... of course I have to admit - I am not too familiar with many TV productions, but generally that elegance is not something that survives the transplant. Everything tends to be courser and less subtle here.
Every country has his language & taste inside his language & taste.
You have to be born in it.
Translations are 99% worser than the originals.
1% maybe better.
If I look back say, 25 years, my perception was different. I am sure that was the case with you too.Do we generally become more philosophical and more apt at catching small details? Perhaps. Although in his case he is a great catcher.
