...because of the thread below I pulled out and watched my original laser disc copy of Blood Simple, not the lesser "Director's cut" imo.Wow, what a movie. And I'm reminded yet again of what great character actors the Coen brothers used. M. Emmet Walsh, Dan Hedaya (and later John Goodman and Trey Wilson).
"The world is full of complainers. But the fact is, nothing comes with a guarantee. I don't care if you're the Pope of Rome, President of the United States or Man of the Year, something can all go wrong. But go ahead, complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help, and watch him fly. Now in Russia, they got it all mapped out so that everyone pulls for everyone else. That's the theory anyway. But what I know about is Texas, and down here... you're on your own."
And now I'm going out to Blind Willie's in Atlanta to hear Rosie Flores and some great rockabilly!
Follow Ups:
...are my favorite modern noirs.Ain't nothing like a tale of greed and desperatioin to make my day.
you must also like "A Simple Plan".
Have to check it out again.
Hope you had a great rockabilly night.
!
Marge Gunderson (the cop)
Not that I donīt like her that much, but play she can!
Grinning fool has no text
no
Grinagog grins!
I most loved her in " Almost Famous " she had the right tune of the 60īs. Wonderful Mom!
Nice to know...Hehe..My computer has the bad habit to remember the first words and if I donīt take care....I post an old title....But now that you are here..How do you find Frances McDormand?
I for one thought that the (shorter) director's cut was an improvement on the already wonderful original. This film makes a great bookend with "Fargo".
Blood Simple, Crimes Of Passion, Body Heat, Dressed To Kill and Body Double into that quirky category of Who Dunits. Fargo works for me too.
Not a bad group at all.
Sometimes first is best. Absolutely M. Emmet's best role in a film. The dark humor was incomparable. It really is hard to say which Coen brothers film is best but Simple and Millers Crossing vie for the tops on my list.
when after the brilliance of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona I had to wade through their murk for years until FARGO before they made another decent film
Took you long enough guys...

Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, and .....still waiting.
"The Big Lebowski"? Hilarious movie that really hits it's stride on about the 3rd viewing."The Man Who Wasn't There" is quite excellent too.
That screwball divorce comedy (with the impossible to remember name) that came out last summer was enjoyable too. I imagine it will get better the next time I see it as well.
I didn't like O Brother. It crossed too many genres and felt lopsided somehow. I think the subject matter just doesn't move or inspire me. The Odyssey references felt forced and the Klan rally Marx Brothers homage fell flat. I was very bored by it.
Billy Bob hit his stride in that one.
And again, a lot of people killed by the end.
...with The Big Labowski was too much profanity, particularly by the Goodman character. It seemed forced and out of place.
I had a roomate in my early 20s and he was EXACTLY like Goodman's character in Lebowski. He didn't bowl, but he was loud foulmouthed party animal fixated on having Vietnam empathy (even though he was never there). He even looked like Goodman in that role with the shaggy flat top and sniper shades.People like him really exist and the Coens had a field day poking fun at them.
Yeah, lots of profanity and "the dude" was an inverterate pot-head, but I find that sorta behavior prime material for an irreverent comedy.
and " O Brother"l didn't think much of these films at all when I first saw them but they are slowly winning me over
Must be the music...
