Sometimes first is best. Absolutely M. Emmet's best role in a film. The dark humor was incomparable. It really is hard to say which Coen brothers film is best but Simple and Millers Crossing vie for the tops on my list.
Follow Ups:
when after the brilliance of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona I had to wade through their murk for years until FARGO before they made another decent film
Took you long enough guys...

Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, and .....still waiting.
"The Big Lebowski"? Hilarious movie that really hits it's stride on about the 3rd viewing."The Man Who Wasn't There" is quite excellent too.
That screwball divorce comedy (with the impossible to remember name) that came out last summer was enjoyable too. I imagine it will get better the next time I see it as well.
I didn't like O Brother. It crossed too many genres and felt lopsided somehow. I think the subject matter just doesn't move or inspire me. The Odyssey references felt forced and the Klan rally Marx Brothers homage fell flat. I was very bored by it.
Billy Bob hit his stride in that one.
And again, a lot of people killed by the end.
...with The Big Labowski was too much profanity, particularly by the Goodman character. It seemed forced and out of place.
I had a roomate in my early 20s and he was EXACTLY like Goodman's character in Lebowski. He didn't bowl, but he was loud foulmouthed party animal fixated on having Vietnam empathy (even though he was never there). He even looked like Goodman in that role with the shaggy flat top and sniper shades.People like him really exist and the Coens had a field day poking fun at them.
Yeah, lots of profanity and "the dude" was an inverterate pot-head, but I find that sorta behavior prime material for an irreverent comedy.
and " O Brother"l didn't think much of these films at all when I first saw them but they are slowly winning me over
Must be the music...
