I had a roomate in my early 20s and he was EXACTLY like Goodman's character in Lebowski. He didn't bowl, but he was loud foulmouthed party animal fixated on having Vietnam empathy (even though he was never there). He even looked like Goodman in that role with the shaggy flat top and sniper shades.
People like him really exist and the Coens had a field day poking fun at them.
Yeah, lots of profanity and "the dude" was an inverterate pot-head, but I find that sorta behavior prime material for an irreverent comedy.
