Hi all,I have been offered Strictly Ballroom on laserdisc and I don't know anything about this movie. Can anyone tell me what it's about and if it's worth buying. They want $12.00 for this laserdisc.
John
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the input and I will also check out that Shall we dance movie...
Vic,Before Baz went over the top with Moulin Rouge, he made this gem about a community crazed over its local ballroom dancing celebs and the pressure to win. It's a dark, grainy film that works because the cast is superb, the music is excellent, and it's funny.
This film cost peanuts to make and it made it back 10X because the audience could identify with the characters and because people enjoy watching professionals dance.
There was a Japanese remake of this recently that was also excellent.
I thought it was just OK... one of those forgettable good experiences. Why not Hollywood? They believe that spending $300M on a film that produces $400M in revenue is good deal.
Gibson's Passion apparently only cost about $20M and its projected earnings are extimated at up to $300M.
Hmmmmmm....
Coincidentally I saw it on a first date with a Japanese girl. She melted. It was a good pick!
Vic,I liked Shall We Dance. It was a very simple story, well acted, and a slice of life. No explosions, massacres, Elves, ewoks...
Hollywood is out of control.
I've seen 5 movies in the past two weeks in the theater (Miracle, 50 First Dates, Big Fish, City of God, and In America) and only the last one was really good.
Big Fish was okay but nothing special.
I managed to get a ticket for the first showing of "The Passion" here in Rockville and I am going to see it with an open mind. I think Mel's vision of Christ's last day should be viewed as "Mel's literal adaptation" and judged accordingly. The anti-semitism angle is for the weak minded who have no faith in either what they believe or what they stand for.
I understand that it is quite graphic, and turning people off as a reuslt.
Well, let us know how it goes - the Passion... I will probably miss your post - will be traveling, but I will catch up later.I think you are probably right about the anti-Semitic angle, but we will know more when the film is out.
Personally I find both the subject and the maker less than exciting, so I am in no rush.
I haven't seen it, but you will find plenty of info on it in the link.Make sure to check out the reviews there - there are quite a few of them.
