According to an article/interview in the current Rolling Stone, Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong WILL be set in 1933 and Naomi Watts has been signed for the Fay Wray role, It turns out that Jackson is a life long KK fan and was vying to do a remake in 1997 but shelved the idea for seven years to do the LOTR trilogy. He has carte blanche now because of the resounding success of those films.
Follow Ups:
Universal pulled the plug in preproduction because they were worried about competition from Mighty Joe Young...and probably about Jackson himself, who was best known for Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners back then. Although HC was critically acclaimed and earned PJ and Fran an Oscar nom, none of Jackson's movies were big hits. It was Jackon's search for a fantasy project utilizing the forces hired at Weta Workshop/Weta Digital (for KK) that lead him to LOTR.'Tis a well known tale.
Universal changed its tune after the success of LOTR. Jackson's deal for writing, producing and directing is $20,000,000. Jackson/Walsh Boyens are writing with a new script they deep sixed the 1997 screenplay.
When is this scheduled for release?
nt
Yep, I know.So did Copola, so did Costner (after "Dances"), so did Lucas and so did the Brothers Wachowski.
Maybe it is not an unmixed blessing to have Carte Blanche? (I'm pullin' my punches, here)
You mean "One From the Heart", "Waterworld", and "Howard the Duck" aren't great films?
