The endurance during the suffering from the violence was a needed piece of reality of what the Christ went through for every human being. Believe it or not, this was real and true love story. All the Hollywood stuff out there and nothing about Jesus. Finally something new, and New it was as it was a very powerful film with documentary realism. The greatest love is to lay down your life for your friends.
It is not fun watching Jesus suffering, it is moving to see he did it for us. No one is there chomping at the popcorn enjoying seeing one being tortured. It is way beyond that.
Who is this stone of stumbling and rock of offence?
The apostle Peter captures this idea and reminds his readers, "Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed." (1 Peter 2:6-8). He combines two verses from Isaiah (28:16; 8:14) with Psalm 118:22 in 1 Peter 2:6�8. The chief corner stone is the stone of stumbling and rock of offence for those who refuse to believe. However, He is the solid rock of salvation to those who choose to believe. The purpose of the "stone, a tried stone, a precious corner�stone" is a foundation that gives stability and security to the believer. How can the chief corner stone become the stumbling stone and rock of offense? They stumble because they are disobedient to the word.

Then what is your motivation for watching this bloody portrayal if you already know what happened? Why did you desire to see this? What satisfaction can be derived from viewing it. I'll bet there are thousands who will go again and again to this movie. Why? It strikes me as sick. I prefer to visualize Jesus as John reveals Him in Revelation 1 vs 12-18. I suggest you read it and get some Joy in you brother. Do you really think that Jesus wants his followers moping and crying from a lousy movie portrayal of Him? Please! He holds the Universe together by His word alone, He doesn't need your pity.

  Two words: The Titanic. We all know it sank, and yet...
  Yours would be a justification for never reading a book twice, or seeing a movie again.
  The fact is, such things are often enough *more* informative, and more enjoyable, the second or even third or fourth time through. Why not this?
  And if you prefer to visualize things for yourself, well and good... but have you seen any of the LotR films? Or *any* movie made from a book? Hmm...?

    In most cases, I agree with you Clark, but not in the case of this particular film. It is more than a mere movie.

        Haven't decided yet. I'm not a fan of cinematic (or religious) gore.
        That's why I decided to boycott Saving Private Ryan.
        But when it came down to the very last day the movie was in the local thratres, I succumbed.
        So who knows?

  I didn't feel pity. I felt moved by his message and by his grace and courage and by the women in his life and by the power of his presence for the people that could see it.
  I almost didn't go because of the violence. I almost never see violent movies anymore and I was fully prepared to leave if I couldn't stomach it.
  As a non Christian who has strong feelings about Jesus and his message of love the movie was powerful for me. It wasn't earth shattering and I probably won't see it again but I'm glad I saw it.
  And I certainly didn't cry or mope...my eyes welled up and I felt emotional but only during the scenes where he was espousing his teachings of love (and when, even in his battered state he was praying for and uplifting others).
  I don't know why you're expressing such negativity about the movie and towards those who felt/feel compelled to see it but maybe you should see it so your opinion can be better informed.
