would be worth 4 stars if it wasn't "Americanized". So, are you going to fly to Europe to see the master's final statement? Don't you just love the value systems of the American "morals editors".I sure wish hollywood wasn't so afraid of NC-17.
The review was so interesting I may even go see it--even though I can't stand to see Tom Cruse smirking one more time. Wish he got Sean Connery (dirty old man).
Kubrick is way before my generation but I remember at a party my friends were watching ClockWork Orange... I arrived at the party late, I walk in and there on the big screen is a ceramic penis crushing a woman... My thought I love this guy!!!!! I later saw the whole movie and loved it. My expectations for Eyes Wide Shut are a bit negative. I think its basically going to be a softcore porn movie with an artistic flare. It is a shame that the real version won't be shown. It's also sad for America to make the sex such an object... If they'd just give it to us on cable tv there wouldn't be much to talk about Eyes Wide Shut. People with real insight would talk about the story of movie instead of just the sex. All I have been hearing is steamy Nicole and Tom... thats so cliche. Nobody has talked about the backround and imaginative writing behind the movie.

I sure wish hollywood wasn't so afraid of NC-17.You know it is all just money, not the morals. The NC-17 gets you into maybe 10% of all theaters and immediately kills all the profits. I certainly admire those who do it just for the love of art, but how many producers can afford to ignore the money side?

My feelings exactly. I am not at all ambivalent about it - I know I will go and see it, but boy, do I hate that face! And his wooden bimbo wife. I happened to see her recently in one of those stupid actions with the cute Georgie-boy and she was so incredibly inept even for that kind of quite undemanding production...

Kubrick was able to create a masterpiece using not even the second-rate, but trully a third-rate actor - I am talking, of course, about Ryan O'Neal in Barry Lyndon. Without a doubt, all other stuff that Ryan has done doesn't rise even to 10% of that performance. So to some degree I am tempted. Although I never felt such distaste for Ryan as I do for Tom. Ryan is just inept, Tom is offensive. Maybe because he is so successful inspite (or because of) his ineptitude. He really rubbs it in.
But Sean... Just mention his name to my wife and she slides into dreaming coma. Guess what, I don't blame her. Mr. Universe still rules.
So maybe this weekend? Although I need to do a lot of corner beading and taping....

And whom I generally dismiss, but he did his review on 12 and showed some clips that gave me an entirely different impression of the film. He insinuated that the editing done to get the R rateing really made the film silly, pointless, and seriously distracted from the director's intent. It was the first time I ever heard him say a negative thing about a movie, and it made me sit up and pay attention. He seemed really hurt that the editors would mess with the director's cut. I understood him to mean parts were cut out leaving scenes that made no sense, or edited in such a way as to have the same effect.I saw another review today on one of the news shows. The reviewer took issue with the location (filmed in London, set in NY), the subject (Kubreck was so isolated he didn't realize that sex is just not that interesting to Americans anymore--not like violence anyway), and the language (same thing--ho-hum). He went on to say that everyone else raves about the film because of the great director's past masterpieces, and didn't bother to consider that this film just isn't in that league--that Kubreck was out-of-it, disconnected. He said all the past films were looking forward, on the edge, and that this film was looking back. (I'm reminded of a Japanese film I rented at the TLA on Locust St a while back--it was about sexual obsession and rather good too...can't remember the title...)
Of course you're right about the rating. I suppose we'll be able to get the disc with the "director's cut" for a premium. I now live too far out to go to the Ritz and see the real thing, besides, the last time I was there the screen was just a wee bit bigger than my TV, and the sound far worse.
And I suppose Curse & Kidman had something to do with money too. I'm just so tired of the faces. How about Morgan Freedman in that role? Would add another element to the film--you think he would do Kidman? There are so many Hollywood faces that are beyond inept, as you say, and just plain horrible to look at: Richard Geere and What's her Name are together in a new film. Who is watching that dreck? Same thing, Geere has that irritating smirk that makes me wish I weren't a Quaker so I could feel good about smacking him one. They never let you forget that the film is about them, the star, not the character they're playing. It's why I love foreign film so much. Even if you don't know what they're saying, a good director and music score can take you to the right place.
