I found the film fascinating, but a little toooo long. Instead of eleven principles, about nine was all I needed!I see the movie as the other commentators here. McNamara didn't own upon to the Vietnam war--admittedly, he may have signed an "early" warning to exit that war--after 25,000+ Americans had died!--but I got the impression that McNamara shifted the blame largely on Johnson. Was this McNamara AND the film editing, or just McNamara?
The WW2 material was sobering, esp. the remark that LeMay made, to the fact that had the U.S. lost the war, U.S. military officers would have been tried as war criminals for fire-bombing Japanese civilians.
I thought director Earl Morris gave McNamara a pass on the Viet Nam era.The early Curtis LeMay WWII material was new to me and, thus, fascinating. So was the Ford Motor Co. stuff.
McNamara, himself, struck me as an egotistical guy trying to hide the fact. He certainly doesn't see himself as others do; hence, the personality disorder which is so readily apparent in him. He's desparately trying to cleanse himself of the Viet Nam stain. He's a shrewdie but, ultimately, a pathetic guy.
Well worth seeing. It'll probably be on PBS at some time in the near future.
Saw it.Macnamera's role in WWII (logistician for the bombing of Japan) was really interesting and was the best part of the film for me.
He did this movie to help him sleep at night. He laid all the blame of Vietnam on Johnson.
The parallels between Vietnam and Iraq laid out in the film are obvious and true. I think this was one of the reasons why Mac did the film. To show that we ARE making the same mistakes again. History will has villified him so he also agreed to do it to try and clear his name, to show how he was just a fallible man in an impossible situation. Not sure how successful he was on this.
Saw the movie, thought it was great, and like you said, the most interesting part was actually the portions on Japan -- some stuff in there I suspect many people had no idea of.
