French films are not "foreign" to a Frenchman, Germans are not "foreign" to a German. I personally do not consider ANY film "foreign" - only bad ones are foreign to me.

    If this was an American movie forum, then what you are saying would hold water.
    As it is, this is an international one, so for any one group - however prevalent - to hijack its national origin is arrogant.
    I suggest we drop the stupid and divisive "foreign" label and simply state the country of origin of the film in question.
    And yes, "American-centric" DOES carry negative connotation.
    Today we have all the means to enjoy the diverse cultures the world has to offer, so let's not lock ourselves into one tight pigeon hole.

      I didn't miss your point. You have missed mine, so let me restate it for you again. This forum is extremely parochial in the scope of its discussion. It's really only a couple of people talking, and IMO, this has come to be by design. You folks drive off discussion of popular films, if you haven't noticed. It's nothing more then pigeon-holing in reverse.
      You're arguing semantics. You read a lot of pretext into words instead of taking them for their literal definitions. I'll state it again: Foreign, to me, is anything situated outside MY place. It has no ulterior definitions beyond that. American films are foreign to the Chinese. Indian films are foreign to the French. German films are foreign to me. Isn't that simple? Judging by your post history, you love telling people what they should like; But please stop putting your personal definitions in other people's words.
      American-centric does not have any negative connotation to me. Neither does any other ethnocentric viewpoint. We are all products of our upbringing and needn't make apologies for it. Again, this isn't to say we shouldn't broaden our cultural palette by sampling what the world has to offer (and more importantly to me, trying to understand how others' think). But seeing the world through ethnocentric eyes is perfectly reasonable IMO. And if someone doesn't appreciate other culture's works, who are you to tell them they're ignorant, arrogant, or stupid?

        So far you have done many posts mostly attacking my opinions - that is fine with me, but if you instead put your energy into writing about what you like, then you perhaps would not feel that left out.

        As I said, I post what I feel touches me - I think this is the only fair and honest thing to do.
        What you do is your business, I have no say in it. But if you decided not to bless us with your insight, then don't come here crying that the "popular film" you liked was not properly covered here - that's all.
        Anyways... it is a quiet period at the moment, as the cable channels seem to be full of kaka and nothing else... and I couldn't make it to the rental store this weekend.
        But I know the world is full of interesting films, so I am not gonna limit myself to regurgitating the Lost in Translation - I shall let Patrick roll his eyes in rememberance of her sexy voice - he-he... - and I shall wait for his reaction to "What Happened Was..." - which was not, BTW, a foreign film even to you... he also had an interesting reactions to Rublev, and I woudln't mind seeing him write about it.
        I would submit to you, my dear nasty friend, that if someone simply looked at every film I posted a positive review about here, he would not be so badly off overall at all... surely, he would end up with some disagreements, but I have no doubts it would open up his horizons... just like following the recommendations of some good folks here did open mine.
        Back to surfing channels... have a cold one - seems like you really need it.

  What makes your's and Patrick's Euro-centic film perspectives any more credible than anyone else's? If it's because you post more often than other folks, that seems like a rather lame argument. As for which movies are "bad" or "good", that's a matter of taste; I might think your's is as decadent as you do mine!

  No offense, but as far as I can tell, no one has annointed YOU or Patrick the caretakers of what's bad and/or good cinema. However, from the number of pretentious "squeeky wheel" posts you guys promulgate around here it's beginning to look like your agendas are more along the line of making this Forum into a personal referendum on American cinema!
