Anyone familiar with his films? If not, I can heartily recommend them as very entertaining and quite different than what we're used to in mainstream cinema. Films of his worth watching include"Kikujiro" - about a boy in search of his mother. Funny, sad, inspiring, all wrapped up into this film. HBO ran it a few times last year, and every time I came across it I was compelled to watch it to the end.
"Sonatine" - Japanese yakuza-gangster flick. Worth watching just for the elevator shooting scene.
His only mainstream release in the US was "Brother", which I feel was good, and worth watching.
I have yet to see some of his other highly acclaimed work, "Fireworks" and "Boiling Point". Hopefully I will get to do that soon.
