hi,
because the movie stinks. The characters often sound like they time warped back to the Seventies. They smoke pot, and have temper tantrums
like 70's kids, we were in our 20's back then . The plot is driven by a mid life crisis, of the sort you see in men in their 30's. Cruise simply cruises thru that crisis, giving you no sense of why this centered and successful young physician suddenly turns thrill seeker. The sex cult has an odd feeling of unreality, as if Kubrick was bringing a fantasy to life.
Either that or the private lives of Brits are a lot stranger than i had supposed. And the danger that moves the crisis along, well, what can you say? To borrow a phrase: 'what's their motivation?'. The poor bugger simply lost it; and no one involved in the project had the intelligence, or compassion, to call it off. The best thing i can say about this movie is that you get to see Nicole Kidman naked, a lot. Do Kubrick a favor and avoid it. I wish i had.
Motivation. Why does Kidman tell Cruise about the naval officer? Why does he respond the way he does? Her claim to have gone with the officer no matter what the conseguences would have been for her future life, family, husband, or maybe even herself was the most interesting part of the movie for me. Pretty passionate she claims to be, eh?
***Do Kubrick a favor and avoid it.Well said.
As far as naked Nicole, there is presious little mystery. Every square inch of her body is well known by now to anyone with a cheap cable hookup. Result is one long yawn... Would be different if she her acting skills were worth one rusty dime.
So yes, the great creator of Barry Lyndon lost it many years ago. He's been on a gentle slide since then, with the Eyes representing the final and steep dive. Fortunately, he left behind enough to be considered on of the greatest of all times - which is more than perhaps 99.99% of movie makers have done.
