there is no equalty between stream of consciousness and shapless abstract. Fellini plays with the viewer, and by exposing his own emotins he stimulates those in the spectator. While there is certainly a plan to the progress of the film, it is the imagery and its connection to the world, to the music that makes them so mesmerizing.
Each small episode is profound and deep. Recall the dancing prostitute in 8 1/2 - world of beauty and emotion.
Some will complain about lack of an identifiable plot - my answer is to look elsewhere. There are tons of films with plots.
Fellini is not supposed to be like the others, usually lesser, artists, he is Fellini and if you don't like him then you don't like him, but one would be foolish to deny his greatness.
Jesus, I heard people state they hate Beethoven, so I am hardly ever surprised any more.
Going back to Amarcord - not his best film, but still an interesting study. One just shouldn't come to it looking for Raiders of Lost Ark, or something.
So no, he is not abstract, he is very real and poignant.
Follow Ups:
or understand abstract art. But to Fellini:
81/2, La Strada, and especially La Dolce Vita...masterpieces.
But in Amarcord and later works, he dispensed with story continuity and degenerated. Other artists have done the same, you know, and it's not unfairly to attack a master by pointing out when he has slipped.
Some perspective: I'd rather watch Satryicon (and I loathe it) or Amarcord rather than Raiders. But then, it takes a mighty effort for me to read to my 3 yr. old daughter---one can only take so many childish stories in one's life...
Why choosing the word " attack " ? We should be actually gratefull for his work..ALL of his work..Of course one may find one better than the other following his own temperament! But worth they are all!!!
Raiders and Fellini?

Salut Jayme!
And actually there are hundreds of " mini plots " and not only one or two poor " big one " Every image in it self told us a story, in this case mostly reminiscent of our youth.
A wonder!
