In Reply to: Re: "Amarcord:" A beautiful beginning, what with those posted by patrickU on March 20, 2004 at 02:30:53:
I called it uneven because it does seem to lose the pace somewhat, close to its middle, then recovers again. In that respect the 8 1/2 has a more consistent, relentless push, almost painful, and Amarcord lets you pause and think. Not a bad thing, but I don't know if it was intended that way.
But be careful arguing to our esteemed English Major professor - he read some books, you know.
Follow Ups:
I know, we already discusst it!
But I thing it is from A to Z a marvel, maybe you have to be from the South to feel the whole parfum of it?
Hard to argue with personal judgements, of course, but I had the fortune to see both just a few days ago, a couple of days apart, and I would still maintain that the 8 1/2 is more perfect. Like you I simply love those tiny sub-plots, each one offering food for thoughts, and in the 8 1/2 they were joined a bit more perfectly together. But all that minor criticism is of course at the already fantastic level - let's not forget we are comparing Fellini to Fellini, so the stakes are astronomical.
The only film by him that irritated me was the Satiricon, and it has been perhaps fifteen years, so maybe time to revisit it?
Did you like it?
Anyway, Fellini is all about poetry, he is not Dumas and not Dreiser - he is much more in the Pushkin vain. And if someone doesn't appreciate poetry then Fellini might not resonate.

Cabiria is a monument of a movie, a timeless treasure, simple and poignant in the extreme. One of the 100 best movies of all times.
Yes. Absolutely!
I have start to look at Satyricon for two minutes and was not in the mood So it is delayed...After my" Russian " period I will go for 8 1/2.....But the problem is Doris is looking at the TV a lot ( suddendly ) and did not have the courage to banned her in another room ( Dennis ) ....
And yes.
PS: You may scroll down to a post I send " A statement " as you nave have been called there more than once....
But I am shivering with anticipation now... what if I fail to satisfy his enlightened request? What if I fall short of his expectations of me?
The only way I can think of is, as hard it is to me to tell you, my dear old friend is : SUICIDE!.Poor old chap, I may look after Anya, if it is your last wish...If not, just the same...
What?...Oh yes...Beamer too! Ok.
I don't know what his thing with Fellini is, but I suspect this is just the result of the trivial nihilistic tendencies - if something is acknowledged to be good, it is beneath some to like it.On one occasion a friend told Anya, who loves Bergman and FEELS him, that she only was saying she appreciated the artist because it was expected.
She was furious, and for good reason. That man is nihilistic in other areas too - a Jew who refuses to cover his head in a sinagogue (he only attends when he has no choice - basically just the funerals).
Some interesting psychological observations are always part of being involved into any hobby.
"I don't know what his thing with Fellini is, but I suspect this is just the result of the trivial nihilistic tendencies - if something is acknowledged to be good, it is beneath some to like it."Now that is the pot calling the kettle black. See reviews of Spielberg movies. -- At least 6 are acknowledeged to be better than good. Nihilistic tendencies - look in the mirror. More people like those 6 or a combo of them than 81/2 - If you want to bet your house I'll take it.
.
You see that is just the differences between a real man and boy.
A lot of people thinks if you cahnge your mind you are vulnerable, just the contrary is the case.
Only the strong can change their minds.
base their opinions on what others tell them rather than independantly thinking. You post reviews of what others think to back up your arguements??? I then showed you that I can do the same from an opposing point of view. Get it?
