If only five, I would spread it over five countries.Say, Italy... France... Germany... Sweden... Russia. I could have included Spain or any of many other countries as opposed to Russia, but putting a Russian film on the list would provide wider diversity, I think.
In that case:
Bicycle Thief
Grand Illusion
Tin Drum
The Seventh Seal
Andrey Rublev
For sure this list will give them PLENTY to discuss.
This is just a quick stab, making those short lists is a chore... you feel like changing it every five seconds.
Follow Ups:

.
Do you think THAT will get the student's attention?
and I don't see why the Tin Drum couldn't stay on the list anyway; High School kids would love that oneCertainly plenty to discuss on that list Victor!
Awarded the Grinagog Seal of Approval
...we simply took the best, the juiciest scenes from the 7, from Kagemusha and the Realm, and rolled them into one GREAT movie?I predict tremendous commercial success to such a venture.
with a few computer graphics and you could have something to rival "Kill Bill"
