But I would suggest the Tin Drum - I am sure you will get more wow's. And if you want a *different* type of a war movie, try Forbidden Games - extremely powerful with no explosions.

If you want another realistic WWII German film, there is that unknown gem The Adventures of Werner Holt - a great big film, but might be hard to find.

The Cranes are Flying is a strong film "from the other side" - a Russian film more aking to Games than Das Boot.

All of these are about as non-Hollywood as you will find.
