I thought the characters were nicely fleshed out from the original comic book characters which were just plain two dimensional. I am basing this opinion on having only seen the previews of the movie and never having actually read the comic books.
I disagree with albee about comic books being shallow vis a vis their characters. I'm looking forward to seeing The Punisher remake and I have all of the books and have read most of them and Frank Castle is far from shallow in print. I personally thought that Dolph Lundgren captured FC pretty well and I believe that the original The Punisher was fabulously true to the books and own it on DVD, so this one will have its work cut out for it. I could see where a critic would have valid criticisms of a character as rendered differently in film, presumming that they actually read the books. I don't know if Rene ever read Hellboy, or not?Anyhow, all one has to do is read Alan Moore's SWAMP THING or Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN to see that characters in comic books can be as vivid as any character in a novel.
I don't read Hellboy, so I can't really say whether RR is correct, but some movies based on books seem to do a better job than others.
