This early Kubrick film is a not only a wonderful caper film which jumps all over the place in terms of time (Kubrick said he was always trying to "explode the conventional narrative") but also a meditation on how even meticulously laid plans can go awry because of the simplest circumstances. Watching it again last night, I couldn't help but thinik that if it were ever remade (hope not) current morality would have the planners get away with the money.
Follow Ups:
It was the first Critierion Laser Disc I ever bought. Still have it and still have the movie on my personal top 25 list.
Yes, my copy is that Criterion LD. My first Criterion was "The Life and Times of Colonel Blimp", since replaced by their spectacular DVD remaster.
...essentially, countless times over. Kubrick's was one of the best.
in "Dr. Strangelove..."
That is a very good film, and there is also its "sister" film: Killer's Kiss that should also be considered a must viewing. I sort of treat these two as a pair. With them the *real* Kubrick began.
I have both but consider "The Killing" the better of the two.
It's been a while since I saw both, so I am not going to argue that point, so I simply keep both.
Do you think that "The Killing" is a better film than"The Asphalt Jungle". It's been awhile for me for the latter so I think I may dig it out tonight while the former is in my mind.
I am afraid same thing here - has been too long to judge them conclusively... both fine films. The Jungle maybe stronger overall, with harder more relentless push, thicker atmosphere, if you know what I mean, but that is just my memory.
I believe this is Marilyn's first role, isn't it?
It was one of her early ones, not the first one, but she war rather fogettable, I thought.
Really? I thought she JUMPED off the screen and it's an early (OK, not the first) example of her incredible camera/screen presense.
Well, maybe... all I am saying is that when I think of Jungle I do not recall her images.Maybe it is just me, but she never did anything for me... except perhaps in Some Like it Hot, and that was well before my maturity.
