About Close Encounters and Blade Runner, that is. I assume you've seen the far superior narratorless version of the latter? Or doesn't that matter? And if so, why?

You originally said the film is " still 'dead-born'" (emphasis mine, of course) or something like that, which suggests that, whatever version, you didn't like it. There are only two versions of Blade Runner, so far as I know.
There were two original versions and at least two more alternate versions released in various formats.
Yes but three from " Close... " The first movie, then a second with a longer end ( you see more from the " aliens " and the third that we now have on video.
I prefer vastly the first version of " Blade Runner " it maybe more " Hollywoodian " ( he is not a replicant ) so more rassuring, but I did was more concentrated and more narrative in the poetic sense. I was really ready to love the the second, but I could not. Even I knew that it was more " near to the book ".
Just a matter of taste, I suppose.
