A poor imitation of another flawed film starring an excellent actor, i.e. Anthony Hopkins' last effort in "Hannibal."
So much is just plain dumb in "Ripley" that analysis would be pointless. I want my 3 dollar rental fee back!
For a film about a really evil, conniving guy...see Christoper Walken in "The Comfort of Strangers." Easily one of the scariest characters in filmdom.
Follow Ups:
I liked "The Talented Mr. Ripley" a lot. Ebert and Roeper gave "Ripley's Game" two thumbs up. So last night I watched "Game" It was terrible - no wonder it went straight to video.
Regards,
Mike
I'm not sure who is really the star: Venice or Walken. That's the best taste of Venice I've seen in a film. Walken and Mirren's pad was fantastic.
Best film that nobody got.
That may be why you were disappointed with the film. Ripley isn't evil in any of Highsmith's Ripley books. Psychologically damaged, yes, but evil? No way. Highsmith was a modernist writer who didn't go in for that kind of simplistic moralizing, so if "Ripley's Game" was true to the novel....
"simplistic moralizing"? What else would you call someone capable of killing for his personal gain if nor evil? A judgement-challenged, perhaps?Sorry I have to agree with tin, but this is ridiculous.
I didn't write the books.
I thought since you made a statement you could defend it.Forget what HE thinks of his character... what do YOU think. You really feel a murderer is not a evil person?
I have not read the books, but in films he kills for selfish reasons. Is that what happens in the books too?
Between the several films John's Ripley is perhaps in between - not as attractive as Delon, but certainly more charismatic, to the point of displaying some semblance of human traits, than Damon. Just realized how close those two names were.
I agree that providing some author's insignt is interesting, and I appreciate that, but I would like to hear your personal opinion.
...and personally I haven't decided if evil is something you ARE or something you DO.

Anthony is a very fine actor, who happen not to choose the right roles, for their value but more for the money.
I love him anyway.
I don't like John, but I thought his Ripley was a passable film, if considered within THAT particular genre. It certainly was not the worst in that admittedly uninspiring category.Hannibal OTOH has no redeaming values whatsoever, it is simply idiotic. Comparing to it Ripley is a light and elegant fare... strange as it might sound.
Based on this, I presume Hannibal had greater commercial success.
entertainment. "Hannibal" was nothing more than that; "Ripley" was, quite simply, boring.
Well, we of course all have our definitions of what boring is, but I stayed up late watching it, so it didn't exactly bore me to death. It is not a great film, but not a total loss either... again, for its genre.Hannibal was truly idiotic, objectionable... not because of the gore, but because it really treated the viewer like brainless shit.
Speaking of brainless, I turned it off when they got to the eating brains part.
...there are all those idiots sitting there, trying to figure out what will shock the viewer who has seen just about anything by now.
A little more, it had a hint of fine humor, well the kind I love.
