I liked it and would even like to see it again. The script was good, Hoskins was great. Lithgow sure looked the part of the Don and his performance wasn't bad, a little overdone maybe? I would have liked a different portrayal of Don in the beginning. Not quite sure how though. A little more sympathetic, I guess. Special effects were good. Some hilarious moments and some sad ones. Overall, a very good made for cable movie. Is it my age or "American Beauty"? Another movie about a midlife crisis? Well, end life, but so was AB.
Saw the first 30 minutes of it this weekend. Tried really hard to get into it, as generally I like these types of tales (e.g., most of the redone Shakespearian plays of late, especially Brannagh's Much Ado About Nothing - Emma Thompson is amazing).Just couldn't get into it. We just found the retelling booring. My wife & I both thought it would have benefited from closed captioning - - Lithgow was tough to understand.
I much more preferred the Horatio Hornblower miniseries from last year. It's now out on DVD and I'm going to buy it.
Well, I do agree that Lithgow could have been better. Still, I'm glad that someone attempted a modern version of this classic. And I feel it got better after that first half hour.Totally agree about Branagh. Saw "Much Ado.." at the theater and again on video. Just great entertainment, and Shakespeare yet.
I think Branagh is another one of those geniuses. Have you seen his Hamlet? I missed it at the theater, not sure if it's out on vid yet. And the war movie, Henry the fifth? A long time since I've seen it, but still can remember some of those battle scenes.Don't get me onto miniserieses. I'm still debating whether to buy the Rumpole set. I really loved the tv show until I read the books. Wow, that Mortimer is a great writer. Still, Leo McKern is who I think of whenever I think about Rumpole. You know, come to think of it British TV had some great stuff. There's the Inspector Morse series, oh and the BBC's "Pride and Prejudice", did you see that one? Great. Oh yes, going back aways there was "I Claudius".
