In Reply to: Bergmann depressed by own films..... posted by patrickU on April 10, 2004 at 05:25:17:
Sven Nykvists cinematography is masterful, Bergmann had actresses like Liv Ullman to grace the screen, its not all bad
He has none of the humor or quirkiness of Fellini or Bunuel, but he is every bit as great a Director as either of these two
Woody Allens clumsy attempt to copy Bergmann with "Interiors", and Allen has never disguised the fact he idolises Bergmann, now THAT'S depressing; but as dark and terminal as most of the "real" Bergmanns themes are his films are about as finely crafted as they come
Unlike Allen he does not have the luxury of watching "Bananas" or "Take the Money and Run" and having a chuckle over these at the end of a long career, perhaps thats his motivation for this comment, not enough humor; all too serious, but he has no real reason for self-deprecation, he's about as respected and famous as any artist could ever hope to aspire to be in any sphere of the Arts
I like his films immensely but watch them sparingly, they don't depress me, but I expect they depress every aspiring filmmaker who know in their hearts they will never, ever, make a "Seventh Seal" or a "Wild Strawberries"Grins
Follow Ups:
***but I expect they depress every aspiring filmmaker who know in their hearts they will never, ever, make a "Seventh Seal" or a "Wild Strawberries"And that is good they won't, who needs the seconds... but there are things like Liv Ullman's Faithless, so not all is lost.
.
From him to him...No he has not, but he is more a man of theater, and from the cold north....
Intelectually he may be more humanly profund than Bunuel, but who cares, as they are the best of what we have.
Mr. Allen attempts is pityful yes, but he made such funny films and in his own kind he belong to the very best of the genre.
I think Bergmann is truly and absolutely honest, he goes so far as self-demontage.
His insight are our gain.
