Let me get this straight, Victor. You watched this film before?! Why did you watch even a part of it for a second time?!Idiocy? Yes, absolutely. But that's Hollywood, Victor. Don't look to mainstream American cinema for honesty or realism. Ain't gonna happen.
>>This movie ... is nearly single-handedly responsible for two generations of people who belive that German camps were, oh, uncomfortable.<<
I think you're over-estimating the influence this film had.

It was on the screen as walked into the room - I believe that was the American Movie Classics, or something rather.
I don't regrett doing this - I picked some things that made my feelings stronger.

I agree in general terms. HOWEVER... it becomes the predominant force if there is no counterbalance. And there is NO counterbalance. If there IS any, please let me know.
I don't care much for most of Hollywood rubbish - but as far as I am concerned, that has right to exist as long as there are buyers. It exists in ANY culture. Problem with OURS is that the counterbalance was destroyed long before the game even started.
I think most of us know how much time the average American student spends on the European WWII. This is disgrace.

I wish you were right. The reality is frightening, however. As you might recall, there have been many "Great War Movies" lists presented here, and I believe the Stalag was on most, if not all, of them.

Victor,I did a search and didn't find any mention of Stalag 17 in top ten lists on this forum. Someone did mention as a "classic film that deserves your attention" or something to that effect. Someone else called it a "bad" Billy Wilder film, worth watching only because it was Billy Wilder.
Hmm, interesting. I appreciate your effort. I don't remember it quite that way, but will take your word.Anyway, it is really nice to have a place to vent one's steam, and folks who understand. I felt quite frustrated last night.
Now, if I could get more folks to talk about them swords every now and then, that would be even cooler. How many times can one discuss a noisy transformer?
... but I wonder if you've seen Three Kings yet. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion.
Well, they are fascinating. Like snakes, perhaps. We are scared and want to keep looking. And to touch...No, have not seen the Three Kings yet, read the review and will try to get it. You think I can sweet talk my wife into watching it? I suspect I will have to promise washing floors for three weeks just for that one.
Are you *really* saying it is worth THAT?
Maybe you can work out a deal involving your sword ;-)Sorry. Couldn't resist.
