All this talk about film vs. reality reminded me of a letter to the editor I once read. I was living in small midwestern city when Seven (that serial killer movie) came to theatres. A local, newlywed couple wrote the paper to complain that such "trash" shouldn't be shown in public. As newlyweds, they had planned a nice evening out and decided to see Seven. Brad Pitt -- he's a romantic lead, isn't he? The newlyweds were appalled, just appalled! They left "feeling dirtied" by its frank depiction of such an unseemly subject.Who goes to see a movie about a serial killer and expects to leave feeling anything but sullied?
Plenty of people do. The newlyweds weren't upset about the film's depiction of violence so much, I suspect, as about its refusal to provide a happy ending.
