Her wit and charisma were legendary. She was, at her peak, the best.On the male side, W.C. Fields had some splendid zingers - most of which were his, and not some writer's. Same can be said for Mae. Both she and W.C. wrote most of their own dialogue.
Some other notables would be Groucho Marx, Robert Benchley, Kate Hepburn, and Bette Davis. Few current writers and/or performers can match their acerbic wit.
