My six year old grandson has outgrown the Teletubbies and Little Engine that Could, etc etc. When he gets to visit us on some weekends now he wants to watch "monster movies".We discovered this by accident when he saw "It Came from Beneath the Sea" on my shelf and wanted us to watch some of it. He really enjoyed it and I later rummaged up a few more. And I realized these 50's sci-fi monster films were really tame and yep, hokey. There is no bad language and the violence is usually brief and off-screen in shadows etc. but he loves them. "20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs the Flying Saucers, The Giant Claw, and his favorite so far: "The Monster the Challenged the World". It's about big sea snails that a chubby Tim Holt disposes of.
Follow Ups:
It uses no bad language but higher vocabulary as to not talk down to kids. Special effects are terrible but costumes were excellent and always some monster for the Doctor to save the universe from. I recommend the Tom Baker years as the Doctor. He was the longest running and most popular. Episodes with the Daleks as villains were most popular.It was the longest running science fiction series in history from ~1960-1989.
They are on DVD and tape and while a tv series were usually set-up as 3-6 half hour installments - so on tape they are put together so they're like a film with a running time of 1.5 hours to 2.5. Then it's off to save yet another planet from another villain.
The Black Scorpion; Fiend Without A Face; The Man From Planet X;
The Angry Red Planet; Forbidden Planet(with Robby the Robot); and
Day of the Triffids(early 60s) - AH.
this excellent film IMO will appeal to children of various ages,
including older ones in their second and third childhoods. Great
effects, good story and great multi-character performances by
Tony Randall. And not to forget the ever-lovely Barbara Eden! - AH.
Look up Ray Harryhausen, master of stop-motion and other special effects in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
Jason and the Argonauts (1963). I still jump when the skeletons come up from out of the earth.
"Clash of the Titans" (1981)Most enjoyable!
