Though knowing Cruise was in it, I don't know why I should have been disappointed. Cruise should stick to fluffy stuff. I didn't see anything in its making to set it apart.Casting as honorable heroes those who fight to preserve a severe fuedalism and brutality? If I was a Japanese peasant conscript, I'd have used a Gatling gun on those bastards too. Or maybe I got it wrong, and it was actually about the Stockholm Syndrome. Besides, if an alcoholic American can become full-fledged master of the samurai arts in a few months while recuperating from serious wounds, what's with the mystique.
I'd have prefered a remake of Shogun, a story that at least exposed the oppression and of cruelty of the Samurai culture.
Follow Ups:
... both Magnolia and that Philip K Dick movie (can't remember the name)... but I too, was disappointed in 'Samurai', if for no other reason than it was so forgettable
He should be on Risky Business XIII.
It's tiresome -- these high-budget action romps posing as art films (Last Samurai, Master and Commander).
