One thing I've never been able to find out is why they killed off Lt. Yar in the first season.

I had the same thoughts regarding that episode where they change phase. They were magically monitoring "unusual radiation" patterns on the ship and figured out they had to flood 10-forward with the radiation to bring back their crewmates.
