I dont watch movies much anymore, for whatever reason. Yesterday,
however, a friend loaned me a tape about the making of "Alien",
which tape was just recently made. Came as part of an "Alien"
4 disc set he won somewhere. Tape was very interesting - esp.
the parts where H.R. Giger is talking about his (very substantial)
role in the movie. Ridley Scott had some interesting things to say
too. After watching that, I decided to watch the movie (am lucky enough
to have a wide screen LD version). And you know what? Even 20 years
later, this film holds up marvelously well. It still scares the piss
out of me! Of sure, some of the technology things look a bit dated
(but not too much so), but the creature is still menacing, the acting
still looks quite good, the scene when the critter pops out of of
the guy's chest is still incredible - in short the whole concept
holds up quite well. One of my 10 most favorite movies, and IMO
easily one of the top 50 or so of all time.Maybe I will rent "Aliens" tonight & watch that one. It's also a
great movie, but is more of an action flick than the original. If you haven't seen these 2 movies (and I cant believe there is
anyone who has *not* seen them) then by all means do yourself a
favor: see them soon. They are great!
I don't care for "monster" movies or scary movies in general, but I have to make an exception in this case. One of the things I liked so much about Alien is the muted, muffled dialog in the background throughout the whole thing, so you have to pay very close attention to what's going on, gets you leaning way forward in your seat and then springs a stupid cat on you or some Hichcock trick like that. The first, and only, time I saw it was a midnight showing on a date. It really spooked me. I would not go into the girl's darkened apartment first. It takes alot to get me to suspend my disbelief--this one works . Gets my two thumbs up.
I love those "the making of" documentrys. It's like haveing "Cliff Notes" of your favorite films.
I am with you - most "monster" movies are quite boring. The only
other one that I really liked was John Carpenter's version of "The
Thing".Probably the scariest movie I ever saw was "Wait Until Dark" with
Audrey Hepburn (I think). Came out in mid 60s. Alan Arkin (I think)
plays the heavy. If you haven't seen it, put it on your "too see"
list.Mike
yea, I liked the thing too, it really did scare me, and I don't like to be scared so I guess I don't even like good scary movies. Wait Until Dark is different tho-- I do like the psychological scary movies. You ever seen the government issue of "Duck and Cover"? Just think how many Japanese would have survived our bombings had they known to do that!Pee Wee Herman (Paul Rubins) used to show a bunch of that genere of film on his show. I really miss him.
