1) ... is Hollywood getting increasingly more hetrophobic? It seems like there's an ever growing crop of films depicting the only stable characters are homosexual & heterosexuals are worthless bigots. It seems like just another reason not to go to the theatre. Is this my imagination, or is the industry brutally overkilling this as their next "thing"? I don't know what it is but is probably crowding out worthwhile films.2) ... does anybody else have severe problems understanding Shakespear while reading, but listening to it spoken exhibit no comprehension problems? It's weird but my brother is just the opposite. I remember him reading Shakespear in H.S. without a problem, but tonight I was watching Branaugh's "Hamlet" & played interpretter.
Is this forum now for gay bashing, Clinton bashing?Just in the few posts I've read this morning, I see references to Dr. Laura, AIDS, homophobia.
What is so wrong with having a stable gay character in films? Would someone actually not see a film because of that? Should we just go to films that show stable hetereosexual characters and gay characters as worthless bigots?
"crowding out worthwhile films" ????? Give me a break!
I hope you guys aren't really like this because this really bothers me. I used to look forward to reading posts in this forum, but not today. Maybe I just realized that some of you might be bigots and that's sad.
Jimmy
***Just in the few posts I've read this morning, I see references to Dr. Laura,Yep, that's dangerous. Disgusting, too...
***AIDS,
So?
***homophobia.
I thought it was heterophobia. But I guess, when you are hammer....
I guess you don't care who you insult. As long as you make money off them, why should you care? Your true colors are sickening. I'm very happy that I've never purchased any of your company's products. I've never thought BAT products were any good and have never spoken highly of them. Now I can say the same about you.
...is to never discuss politics, religion or sex with customers. No good will ever come of it.

I couldn't have said it any better, but why reveal your spiteful prejudices? Do you have something against legitimate immigrants? What did he do to you?If you have some latent issues with these subjects, take it up with a shrink. Why insult the integrity of this audience with your blatent hostility? You have time to kill? Yes, I know facts can be stubborn things but why initiate your bigotry on him?
Apparently you haven't read my post very well. Let me explain s-l-o-w-e-r. When there are a plethora of heteros around who are all unstable & they seek the o-n-l-y stable character is homo. It gets extremely obvious that this was planned. THAT was what was disturbing. Could just one straight person be stable too??? NOPEIf you still think this is bigotted, I feel very sorry for you.
hi Mart,
in 'In & Out' the whole damn town rises to defend the gay guy. It is a nice moment. It is hardly heterophobic.
Ordinarily, i would not revisit something that makes you feel uncomfortable. I apologise. However, when you start saying 'lock and
load' repeatedly, i become concerned. You need a relationship. You have been avoiding this, perhaps it is time to give it another try.
I say this purely for selfish reasons. It will give me something to look forward to on the drive to Niagra Falls. If you go down in a hail of bullets, that trip (Niagra Falls, wifey's dad's home town, and the Corning Museum, oh joy) starts to look pretty grim. But it's perfectly ok if you want to ruin my life, i don't mind, really.
Re: In & Out
A moment of kindness doesn't make the couple hours of hatred any easier to swallow, nor does it prove acceptance of either proclivity.Re: relationships
It aint me who's stifling this. The women I know prefer to see married men ("leave them alone") or men on welfare ("always available"). The one comparatively sane chance I had recently was dismissed by her when I said that a mild spanking was an acceptable means of punishment to communicate danger prior to the age of comprehension. She somehow thought this meant I wanted to dig out the Cat-o-nine-tails.The few I've recently dated are even worse on the ears than on the eyes. I keep hearing words like "fagot" & "niger". NO THANKS!!! It's like talking to the homosexuals I know who espouse just as much hate for bisexuals. Where do I find these people?
Re: Lock & Load
Don't worry, I'm not about to look for a tower, but something is drastically wrong with the executive branch. Passing taxes without the House of Representatives whose power of the purse it principly resides but that's just explicitly stated in the Constitution, nothing this White House cares about. Personally using the F.B.I. to investigating political opponents but that's only illegitimate for Nixon to do. Firing innocent civilian employees for no other reason than to install you're own operative cronies, but that's part of their touted unparalleled ethical administration, right? Selling the executive residence & policy as well as businesses to the highest bidder towards his own re-election campaign, but he’s so concerned about this that wants to pass even more controlling authority over it than the explicit laws that already exist because just being very illegal isn't illegal enough. Bombing civilians to remove tomorrow’s unwanted headlines of embarrassing truth, but that doesn't matter to him because they couldn't vote anyway. Killing the wife & children of someone that didn't do anything wrong (How dare he follow the law. They taught him a lesson). Letting Castro dictate what is done unto Elian as the long-awaited quick & severe punishment for Castro shooting down an unarmed plane. White House spin is promoted as truth, up until the reporters can't seem to repeat with a straight face & then report on just how wonderfully constructed the lie is.I'm really tired of feeling his pain in my butt. It's quickly becoming time to dethrone the monarch again.
hi,
my sister (technically my sister in law, but that is another story) also carries around a lot of anger. She never dates, she is in her 50's, and will remain a spinster. She is simply unwilling to deal
with the issues that caused the anger in the first place. She is also
brilliant, and a great person ( no, i am *emphatically* not trying
to set you up with her, the last time i tried that it cost me a friend ).
Bottom line, i have been there, and done that. Got therapy, got over it. She didn't. Take your pick. Personally i hate sleeping alone.
I hate it too. That's why I'm still trying to no avail. That's what I'm trying to convey anyhow. I only take a month off occasionally when I'm tried of hearing NO.
Almost everytime I watch a Shakespeare DVD I turn on the subtitles. The British accent also throws me off.
***Is it just me or is Hollywood getting increasingly more hetrophobic? It seems like there's an ever growing crop of films depicting the only stable characters are homosexual & heterosexuals are worthless bigots***The irony in this statement is delicious. Thank you for sharing, your post made my day!
Scott "I'm super, thanks for asking"
Mart,With regards to the first, can you cite some examples of this trend? I just don't see it, but maybe I'm watching the wrong films.
I think I started noticing with "Blast From The Past" where the David Foley is the only sane one there, through "In & Out" & culminated to "American Pie". I'm sure there are plethora in between each but I think you got the gist. What's next? A homosexual superhero who saves a group of neo-nazis?
Why all the stereotypes? Can't everyone be level-headed with different POVs like "Frasier", or does that take too much talent? What are they afraid of that has distorted their sense of humor so?
The talented Mr. Ripley wasn't stable. Seems like I saw something else fairly recently with a gay villian, but I can't remember what it was.I don't have trouble understanding spoken Shakespeare; however, it sometimes does take me a couple of minutes to "adapt" to it.
As to your first, I don't get out much. Last movie I saw in the theater was American Beauty. Not too stable.Next: Please review that Hamlet for us! Is it out on videotape?
Finally, I sometimes have a problem understanding a British accent when a person is speaking rapidly, again I need to get out more.
Yes, it's available on VHS but I was watching on LD. The acting & staging was rivotingly epic. The music is a tad over bearing but setting my preamp's dynamic compressor on low was sufficient to hear the dialog under all circumstances & still be swept away by the sound.
Chalton Heston plays on one the actors of the play within the play. He has a speach that completely steals the scene. I don't remember if it's in the original play but in that scene there's a beautifully crafted shot at Hollywood made with surgical precision. The haunting part is that this is supposedly Shakespeare's entire text (uncut & unabridged).
It is indeed Shakespeare cast in late 1800's (I believe soley for the pagentry) but still in the original tongue. This is keeper!!! It's a much more serious piece of work than Mel Gibson's version. Kenneth must've horned his actors to rapier edge. Even, Jack Lemmon pulled off a credible performance (It was still not upto the task but he didn't trash it either).
Please bear in mind reguarding Keneth Branaugh's work, that while I adored "Much Ado About Nothing", I hated "Othello". I even found Orson Welles more believable than Laurence Fishburne as a discriminated black. Go figure. So, I'm not Shakespear-a-holic. This was just a fantastic flick worthy of Cecil B. Demille. Only this wasn't about effects, it was about depicting the story in a majestic style worth of the name Will Shakespeare.
