Just caught it on Starz! last night. The screenplay was by late Kurosawa. Any comments?
Follow Ups:
It is the Kurosawa film without Kurosawa... some say this is like Rembrandt painting without Rembrandt. Some say it is tedious in the extreme. It wasn't tedious to me at all. I knew it was not the master's work, it was obvious from the first minute, but I liked it nonetheless.
It was easy to delve into the familiar atmosphere - some might say too familiar. To me it was comfortable and inviting, even if not breaking any new grounds.
The story is trivial, and only great masters can make good films out of such stories, so this film will not be included into the short lists of truly great works. But anyone who loves Kurosawa will find his fingerprints in this work, so in essence is it a homage to his contribution to the art of movies.
This is not a film that will shake your foundation, but I certainly hope one will spend pleasant time with it, and one will remember it from time to time with warmth... this is what is happening to me.
Which is far more than one can say about probably 99.8% of all films out there.
