the city-destroying fire spitting unstoppable monster is the spectre of nuclear devastation repackaged
Godzilla is a very popular and enduring cultural icon in Japan; hardly surprising given the historical perspective
Godzilla was named after a particularly unattractive filmset assistant who was nicknamed "Gorilla" by the director
The original film is charming; and yes, it's a man in a rubber suit
Follow Ups:

Written in Katakana phonetics as Gorilla is not a Japanese word
Suspect the assistants name was something like "Kenji" + GO-RI-RA = Gojira
It wasn't just a man in a rubber suit. They used some puppets and even some stop motion in the first film.
Opened my eyes on the whole thing, rubber suite including.
Very entertaining interview by Terry Gross with a man who wrote a book about the Godzilla movies.
