the first twenty minutes, if not for the rest of it: they don't write satire like this anymore.
George C. Scott deserved the Oscar for his performance---he is a brilliant comedian, as well as dramatic actor.
Diana Rigg sinks the middle with her long, rambling feminist diatribe, but the movie survives and hurtles along soon enough.
Is this Paddy Chayevsky's finest screenplay (he did get the "O.")
Follow Ups:
Oscar win in 1955, for Borgnine. I think it was directed by Daniel Mann. And Frank Sutton (from Gomer Pyle-Sgt. Carter) kills as the Marty's lonely pal. Great script.
another great film with a script by Paddy Chayevsky. I believe it was his final work before his untimely death. Was also Peter Finch's last film. He died soon after the film was released.
Given the current trend of escalating violence and crudity in so-called reality TV, Network just might be, in retrospect, prophetic. Great film.

Tin,I watched this last night (again for about the 20th time) and I would pick this as Paddy's best work.
James Garner's thirty second explanation of "Europe" was better than anything I ever heard in any history course.
One of the best war films ever.

"I think this place is restricted Wang, so don't tell them you're Jewish"
The Americanization Of Emily is his AND Julie Andrew's favorite film...Surprising especially since Andrews has been in bigger box office films....
"So...what's all the fuss about: boring!"
But, with an erudite, astute, and clever film appreciator, such as yourself, praising it-----I'll check it out again, soon. Garner is a strange one, kind of like a non-drunk Dean Martin.
James Garner...now there is an actor! My favorite Garner moment on film is in "The Great Escape", when he is cradling Donald Pleasance's body. The dazed, surprised expression on his face will live with me forever.
Of course, "The Great Escape" is a family favorite, but not just for Garner or McQueen's motorcycling...my wife's father was in Stalag Luft III AFTER the escape attempt. Just before the Soviets arrived, the Nazis cleared out the camp and began marching the POWs westward. Happily, the Soviets caught up with them in a day or two later.
We can't wait for the special edition DVD with the documentaries on Stalag Luft III. My wife's father died when she turned 15, and every scrap of detail she can find out about his experiences means so much to her.
I liked him in "Murphy's Romance" with Sally Field.
