Come on. It was fun escapism scifi and not grounded science fiction ala' A.C. Clarke. That said, why would the machines strap up the humans? To avoid the energy drain of all us audiophiles powering up huge SS amps of course.

In the matrix world right before the takeover, humans have overrun the planet with Hummers and Halcro's (and the Tellig cult all have MF 1Kilowatt monoblocks even for their computer music system).
