tho I'm wondering if they used the 35 mm print instead of the 70mm roadshow.Oklahoma and Patton both used the 70 mm prints with sound remixed to Dolby standards. You can tell the difference. I guess Time Warner is waiting to judge market share, then come out with a "Special Edition" using the 70 mm print.
Follow Ups:
Acording to Amazon the aspect ratio is 2.2 x 1, which is the Todd AO process aspect ratio. This may be misleading however because according to the Widescreen Museum the highly touted supposedly correct 2.76 x 1 aspect ratio used for the Ben Hur DVD loses picture information because a "smaller" wide screen negative was used for the transfer. You can see this discussion and frame examples on their extensive web site and any visit there is a fascinating experience.
Thats where i had been directed to after asking about why some movies still letter boxed on 16.9 screens. I read up on Todd AO and lo and behold, a week later ATWI80D was released. Our local PBS station runs classic movies on Saturday night in high def. Last fall they ran the widescreen version of Raintree County. Turgid melodrama with Liz chewing the scenery, but glorious to look at and hear.
I'll print out that FYI on dvd aspect ratios and keep it handy when i go to purchase from now on.
