You want homophobic? Check out the former Soviet bloc or the former Yugoslavia, where gay people still hide their sexuality, where film festivals, including those in the more liberal Czech Republic, are noticeably lacking in overtly gay and lesbian cinema. I remember being at the Sochi Film Festival on the Black Sea a few years ago and watching a Russian movie in which a gangster character bullied an effeminate man. The audience of intellectuals roared its approval.

Well, Sochi of a "few years ago" and a city like Moscow today are two different kettle of fish, clark. Today in most major cities gays walk around openly displaying their preferences.
Of course the ages-old hatred doesn't go away that fast, and mainstream Russia is still quite backward.

    It is disgusting when the "critics" are always on a lookout for something scandalous... those idiots should really be concerned with artistic merits of the work.
    The Western "critics" have been conditioned to look for red meat, and regardless of whether it is or is not there, they will find it.
    Whatever happened to the notion of living and letting live? We are surrounded by assholes determined to constantly stick something into our eyes. And we are surrounded with idiots always making homophobe jokes... while all this should only be your private business.
    So I think he put the assholes and idions in their right place.
    It has nothing to do with Russia, Germany or Shruzumbe - only people behaving like idiots.
