I had only seen bits a pieces of the movie until last night. Is that a real cow that gets slaughtered at the end when Willard is going up to kill Kurtz? If not, that is one of the most real special effects I have ever seen. Was "Redux" released with added footage and was this footage in the original if real?Just curious,
Follow Ups:
however cook it up right and I will gladly eat it.
It IS real footage of a real ritual slaughter that the tribe allowed Coppolla and his wife to witness and film. It appears in both films.Conversant with each, I consider the longer film more successful and, though it is 50 minutes longer, it has a better narrative flow.
according to imdb.com the cow was real. the cow scene was in the original movie.redux adds a lot of extra footage. the sequence with the french plantation people and the second meeting with the playboy bunnies, none of that is in the original version. they pull down the pacing and atmosphere of the film, i think.
i wrote a long post on apocolypse now on this board a long time back if you want to find that. it was in response to bruce from dc saying he wasn't so hot on the film.
jean-luc godard's weekend shows a pig getting killed. it's pretty disturbing how that's shown.
"HEY" - BIG A
It contaminated the main thrust of the plot and the characterizations of the crew as well. It was waaay too cumbersome. I'm definitely in the un-Redux camp.(PS. The Playmates' acting abilities were beyond awful and they didn't take enough off to justify the extra footage!)
It was cut purely for time reasons according to Coppola.
