In Reply to: Just when I thought I'd seen all of the best samurai flicks, I saw... posted by Toshiromeyers on July 12, 2004 at 18:20:22:
Good to hear it's a Wow. I'm anxious to see the Takeshi rendition. Beat is an interesting character, regardless of the role. How does the twitch work here? Also if I may ask, did you or anyone see Shintaro Katsu's Darkness is His Ally? I admit to speeding through it because of lack of time, but was it as fragmented as it appeared to me at first glance?
Follow Ups:
"Darkness Is His Ally" a.k.a. "Zatoichi #26" is a brooding, fragmented mess. But it does have a few superb action sequences: e.g., the bloody ambush inside the inn by the fake priests.
Thanks.I gather you haven't seen the Takeshi version of "Zatoichi". It would be interesting to hear your thoughts as well.
Up 'til now, the best samurai movie that sticks with me is only a memory of viewing it many years ago. It was a Zatoichi movie titled something like "Zatoichi Meets His Equal". The nemesis was a one-armed, agile Chinese (I think) fighter with a short/thick bladed sword. I don't remember much about it, but the idea of "best" I have seen remains. Does this movie ring a bell with you, Tosh? Or, am I confused with some other series?
You got the title right. Jimmy Wang Yu played an iconic one-armed swordsman (directed by the legendary King Hu) and a one-armed boxer in a popular set of HK martial arts films, so it was only natural that the blind swordsman from Japan and the one-armed swordsman from China would fight each other. Two endings were filmed, one with Zatoichi dying for Chinese audiences, and one with the one-armed swordsman dying for Japanese audiences. It is about to be released on Region 1 DVD, but will have only the Japanese audience ending. The One-Armed Swordsman was remade by Tsui Hark as a film called "Dao" (or "Blade" in English) in 1996. That film has a finale with the best swordfighting sequence I've ever seen. It was released on videotape and laserdisc, but I've never heard of a DVD version.
Steve, you're a great resource! I didn't think I was even close with the title. And, I'm guilty of being quick to type here rather than do a search. I appreciate your response with the added information.Best regards
