Since it is Bastille Day, I was wondering if there are any films covering the Revolutionary period that are worth viewing? The superb 'Danton' with Wojceich Pszoniak playing an ice cold Robespierre is the best I've seen. 'Ridicule', which covers the period immediately preceeding the Revolution is fun, with it's 'humerous' opening scene of revenge. Any other suggestions?

Ridicule is weak but, Victor recommendation " La Nuit de Varennes " is very strong. And J.L. Barrault with Marcello!
Acting is superb there... needless to say.But I don't quite agree with your opinion on Ridicule... I consider it light-hearted and witty, with good performances, unimposing and easy to flow with. Like your typical Louis XVI interior.
And the great peeing scene is something to behold!
I know we already discussed it. But as said the second viewing was disappointing...
The Scola? I know only the French one!

So I bought it as a present to my wife.We haven't seen it in ages, so I am sure she will enjoy that DVD.
I shall let you know :-)

Yes of course! Gance's Napoleon, which was wonderful to watch when it was re-released in the 80's with the restored 3 screen 'polyvision'.
I have not seen 'Le Nuit de Varennes'. Harvey Keitel as Thomas Paine? Well, he was quite good as Fereau in 'The Duellists'. Thanks for that suggestion.
I would love to see the Nuit again, so I looked on Amazon... there is no DVD, and the VHS tapes... man, they go for $109.00 USED!Forgossen...
Sad... but I will check my rental store for sure.
I bought the video store's VHS copy when they cleaned house last time...it's not in very good condition, drop-outs etc.Las Nuit de Varennes was on BRAVO or another cable channel (IFC?) about a year ago.
