I find generally the voices being the weak point! On 99,9% of all DVD´s mostly being inintelligible.
On LD they were much more natural.

I have yet to see DVD to match above average LD.
P.S. My DVD hardware is much better than my LD one.
Well I sold or gave away, my LD soft and hardware, as the picture quality on the plasma, was...intelligible!
But I still remember with nostalgia the round warm LD sound....
Yesterday while I was at work my wife had some nephews and nieces over to watch a movie (Starsky and hutch if you're curious). To start, I do not have a center channel. She called and asked why they couldn't hear anybody talking. The bass was there, the effects, it was all there... but the dialogue was unintelligible. "Did you turn on the amp for the main speakers?" 'Nuf said.

That's because until the addition of digital tracks in the nineties LD sound was analog. After digital was added I still preferred the analog tracks, a choice taken away once the Dolby Digital or DTS codecs were substituted for the right analog track.
But the question his why is the digital center/ dialog so bad! It must has something to do with the way that it is done.
I have generally not found this to be true. I assume that your center channel is at the identicl level to the four (or six) others and that it is identical or similarly voiced from the same manufacturer. I wasn't sure what you meant by "bad".I always prefer the DTS codec when it is offered as an option and find the dialog and music "sweeter".
Inintelligible, I think the mix work best at the movie houses. Of course my Surround set up is perfectly done. And I prefer to hear with a phantom channel, and by a wide margin!
The same with me for the DTS issue. And even better with full rate.
Have you switched in a center channel to see if the dialog improves?

I did read the article. I myself prefer straight stereo for music listening, unless of course the music is recorded in multi-channel
sound. I have all these matrix codecs on my pre/pro but as good as they are plain vanilla stereo stills sounds the most natural to me.
Well, actually I hear one demo for MC that was quite satisfying, but it was a seldom even. The main problem ssems to me this center channel, mostly badly mixed, and having some other problems, that make it like taken out of the context.
For certain type of music it seems to work, I have quite a few SACD 4 channel, and that can be effective.
