Thanks, great tips. Does high brightness and contrast wear away at the tv in any way? .... I'll check to see if the local video store has "Video Essentials" or "Avia".Regards,

Most TVs come set in the "torch" mode so they will stand out in a store display. Running it this way is like driving a new car off the lot at a constant 100 miles per hour with no break in. It is essential that the contrast and brightness be adjusted, expecially on your set which has been run a long time in "torch" mode.
The DVDs suggested will help but the best picture and longest set life will come via a professional calibartion by a trained Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) technician using special equipment and "hidden" menus.

"Torch Mode" is a sarcastic saying, not an actual mode. It refers to the fact that sets are delivered WAY too B-R-I-G-H-T.

Amazon has them.
In the meantime, you can adjust the picture by eye. Brightness shouldn't be higher than 50%-those Hitatchis have really bright pictures. You'll be surprised how much you can turn things down , compared to what it is set at the showroom.

setting brightness high does run more juice hence extra heat shorter life.More noise would appear on screen as well.Set the color temps/brightness/contrast/sharp/with room darkened or after sunset.
You want it to have the best picture for evening viewing when picture is better anyway.The Hitachi may have auto picture compensation for day vs night viewing.Break it in with "Godfather"
