Most fun I've had at the movies all summer. Crazy wacky samurai bloodfest. Transvestite geisha, tap dancing, great music, and a satisfying revenge tale where this bleached blond blind dude kicks serious ass. What a blast.
Follow Ups:
Just ordered the Kitano Takeshi remake so it should land next week along iwth Hero (Jet Li) and Eiga no Tokubetsu-hen (Tales of the unusual). He also did another samurai flick called Gohatto (Taboo) that was pretty interesting.Basically, I like all of the Zatoichi films (got about a dozen of them so far) and the Lone Wolf and Cub series, though I tend to like things with a bit of a spooky, supernatural element or things that take place in an earlier time period... particularly the Heian era, so two of my favorite films are Onmyoji and Onmyoji II (the second is only available on R2 disk), which are based around the life of the legendary Abe no Seimei (he was a famous scholar and court magician who lived around 921-1005 and worked in the government's ministry of divination... legend says that his mother was a kitsune, or fox spirit).
If you like Kurosawa films you might also like Samurai Fiction... modern comedy shot on B&W in the classic old samurai movie style. Very well made.
Wow, what a physically beautiful film. Is Onmyoji II in the same league? Also, any info on why Zatoichi #14 (Zatoichi's Pilgrimmage) has not been released on DVD?
Hi Steve,Onmyoji II is even better than the first film (both story and effects). The disk comes with a "making of" dvd (no subs on this disk) which also has some visits to historical places used in the film, and a pewter pentagram charm. Very nice, though 6000 yen is a bit more than most of us are used to paying for a disk. This one deals with the Susano-Amaterasu legend told of in the "Record of Ancient Matters" and a conflict between the Yamato and the people of Izumo (deeper mix of history and ancient Shinto legend)
Don't know what is with Zatoichi 14, have to check with AnimEigo about that. http://www.animeigo.com/Samurai/ZATOICHI.t#1 The earlier films were released by Home Vision Entertainment Maybe it got lost between the two distributors???
I order stuff at yesasia.com or wherever, though you need a region-free player to view them.
I saw "Hero" (Jet Li) and quite liked it. He is so much more in his element than in the Hollywood flicks he's in.My Zenith DVB318 is hacked region-free, so where do you order them with English subtitles?

www.yesasia.comLots of importers out there. Prices vary, between webstores, as does service and stock. It is not uncommon for there to be multiple versions, for different countries. Some are better than others.
Avoid VCDs.
enjoy,
