A Japanese film called "Spiral". Blew my mind.
Another good one from Japan is a film called "Audition". Some really good original horror pics out of Japan.I sure hope Americans don't decide to re-make Spiral & Audition cause they'll surely screw them up the way they did "Ringu"..making it into "the Ring".
Any other Japanese horror anybody can speak for? I only know of these three and I love 'em!
Follow Ups:
Juon: the grudge (theatrical release, not the TV versions)-extremely creepy-scared the crap out of me.
Juon 2 is OK, but not as good as the first
Dark Water-nice atmosphere
Uzumaki-truely bizzarre
Kiaro-creepy, very atmospheric
Into the mirror-not really scarey, as much as twisted-somewhat atmospheric too.
A Tale of two sisters-Ok, but not as good as the others listed.BTW, Juon:the grudge and Dark waters are being redone in Hollywood.
1 problem ( I always have to point out both sides, its my job) is that the solution will be very obvious to us Westerners. I guess its not as widely known in Japan. Kinda kills the suspense, but the first half is creepy beyond all belief.
Moon over Tao. This is really fun... samurai, evil sorcerer, good geomancer, a blood thirsty monster, gallons of sake and some very interesting aliens (who said alien encounters only happened in the 20th century?)Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is a visually stunning anime.
Vampire Princess Miyu OAV 1 and 2, and Petshop of Horrors are rather eerie little anime.Onibaba a classic psychologial horror (B&W Criterion collection)
Kaidan/Kwaidan a 60's color colletion of 4 classic Japanese ghost stories.
Yokai Monsters-really goofy take-off on the ancient legend of the parade of 100 monsters.
Versus... modern tale of yakuza in a haunted forest where the victims just won't stay dead (a bit gory).
Chinese movies... Chinese Ghost Story 1, 2 & 3 are rather nice romantic yet semi-tragic ghost stories with some nice stunt work and action.
Mr. Vampire 1, 2, & 3 and The New Mr Vampire are comic vampire stories with a kung-fu twist.
there is a "Ringu 2" also; same production team. Not bad, but doesn't achieve the outright creepiness of the original
Recommend; The Last Vampire, it's anime and only 45 minutes long but its better to have 45 minutes of brilliance than several hours of schlock, made me wish it was 3 hours long...Grins
I agree about its length being an asset.
It's short enough to watch again and again without committing too much time to something you've already seen and being shorter its easier to get people who think they don't like animation to watch it.Another few the original poster could try are Ju-on (the grudge or the curse) and Dark Water .
as well as Hellsing v.1, if you're into the Vampire genre. Jin-Roh, Armitage, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion and Gasaraki if you're into futuristic Sci-Fi anime. Blue Submarine #6 is truly stellar animation too and at 4x22min episodes, not too long.
Wow, we have very similar tastes. I've seen (and loved) all of those with the exception of Armitage. I’ll have to check that one out soon, thanks for the suggestion. I was even thinking about mentioning Vampire Hunter D but decided it wasn’t horror enough for this thread but I agree it is totally awesome.
Some good ones in there, especially Bebop, but I wouldn't classify any of them as horror (well, Hellsing has its moments)Modern futuristic horror might include Demon City Shinjuku and Wicked City (the latter gets a bit ecchi). Perfect Blue is a horror anime in the Hitchcock vein (guess that is a pun considering Psycho ^-^)
Nightwalker Midnight Detective (2 disks) is rather interesting... episodic tale of a vampire who works as a detective. A few episodes are really good. Especially liked the Heian flashback episodes in Gasaraki. Didn't care for the CGI in Blue Sub 6, just didn't blend with the 2d as well as it did in Bebop.
