I have read that they want a younger actor to play the part - Jude Law has been mentioned.I dunno - I think for James Bond to be credible(such that he is) and to be able to do all the amazing things - like Ski at Olympic levels, fly plains, mountain climb, scuba dive, parachute, be better than any Navy Seal at everything, know 20 languages, be able to fix cars, boats plains and trains and of course disharm nuclear weapons with 007 left on the clock, play every casino game known to man - and of course be the best in the world at all of them, be well versed as a professional thief, be an astronaught on the side, and also be an expert at art, fine wine, biology, Marine Biology, and every other science or collectable endevour -----

I think the Bond series should go "realistic" or completely wacky. Not Austin Powers wacky just...odd. Next movie-Bond is killed within the first 2-5 minutes (as he should have been in every previous movie) and the rest of the movie is a shot of a sprawled body as the soundtrack continues. Or maybe Bond could be become a sheriff in a southern town fighting moonshiners? James Bond - Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury? =)best regards,
Rich S.
we do have alternate choices today like the jason bourne films and mission impossible films. harder edged stuff that plays up the intensity and hard edged persona of the spy character over the humor and playfulness. 007 is unusual as a tough guy that isn't rooted in the noir tradition of the alienated or isolated tough guy, and i think there's always a place for that kind of character.tarrentino in an interview on the charlie rose show long ago wanted to do casino royale where bond kills his own wife ... because that's the kind of cold blooded guy he his.

nah --- we got steven segal already!

RGA,I must not be the only one completely bored with James Bond. The multiplicity of actors playing this role, the repetition of silly world dominance themes, the silly emphasis on hardware, the 2-D women and villains for me is all done since 1970. This franchise is so dull now, the most important, most promoted element of each new Bomnd film ihas become what model of car he drives- with it be an Aston, Lotus, or BMW?.
To me, "Casino Royale" and "Austin Powers" are equally interesting to the last 35 years of Bond films and the satire is too easy. I don't know how anyone over the age of 10 wouldn't prefer good adaptations of John LeCarre. The real workings of the intelligence community are far more bizarre and interesting than these discount comic book figures like Bond has descended to.
How about a new super-hero "Shiela Diamond: Stripperspy". She could have specially-equipped "spy-bras" that save the World..
Cheers,
Bambi B
Shiela Diamond: StripperspySounds good. I am generlaly displeased with most Bonds since the 1970's. Though there was a more seious attempt in Licence to kill and it was one of the ebst ones.
I agree it has turned into a comic book(though it always was to some degree).
Just curious as I don't think I've seen any since the Roger Moore days. (Certainly not in the movie theater.)If I ever feel the desire to see an old Bond movie I always go back to the Connery ones anyway.......
I liked two Moore films "The Spy Who Loved Me" and me Octapussy(though marginal thumbs up).I enjoyed all the Connery films except the terrible Thunderball and Never Say Never Again ---- IMO they should have said Never Again. Dr. No was ok.
Dalton's Licence to Kill was one of the best in the whole series to me - and so was Lazenby's OHMSS Except that Lazenby himself was atrocious.
Goldeye was fun as was another Brosnan one but I can't summon the name - it was the one where a fellow double oo agent turns bad.
Lots of folks didn't like Diamonds Are Forever - it was one of my favorites.
I for one would like to see a woman be "James Bond" for a few episodes. For example, Kate Beckingsale could play Jane Bond (James Bond's 28th illegitimate child borne of a Russian spy)and use some real sex appeal to burn up the screen.Frankly, I'm tired of looking at Brosnan's hairy, flabby chest. Strangely, it doesn't do anything for me at all (?)
Sorry to be a sexist pig but Bond is a man and can only be a man. Sorry feminists but part of the appeal is the fact that James is a male misogynistic alpha male. And as a guy I would rather see James bag 3-4 women in the movie than ONE female lead with a bunch of males - unless Jane Bond is a Lesbian of course - and then Hey I'd agree.
The point of Bond is that all the women watching him want him - and all the guys wish they could be him. Except some girlie man who only wants an art film.
But frankly, I don't know who goes to see those movies. So how about bringing them closer to reality? You can say many things about the Soviets, but to their credit they never went for the dreck like 007, so their spy movies (at least some of them) were often interesting.
I am not against some play element in them, but what started as lighthearted fun with Connery, is now pegging the dumbness scale.
As for the rest, fully agree again...This " franchise " is so stupide and worn out as anything can be.....
After the two or three first films it just turn out to be just some catrsted films, lacking the sexuality & sadism & raw brutality of the books.
Forget all the "things" he can do, James Bond's basic appeal to man and woman is that he is the ultimate in sexy.A man is FAR more sexy after 40 than he could ever imagine being in his 20's or even 30's (and just think of the possibilities he has in his 50"s). All the positive things they have going for them job-wise, their financial security, they have experienced more, they are more comfortable with their views and have started to have the ability to see beyond themselves, etc.
All this adds up to a man who's pheromes smell like confident, thus sexy to a woman.
Wow Jaylene, *IF* I was single, I'd want to meet you :)
That makes sense - I see Ralph Fiennes a lot more in this than a Jude Law type. He's been described as the intelligent woman's sex symbol - so how will that go over with the teen/early 20's female populace? But he seems to be busy with 5 films on the go and stage-work - but apparently Brosnon wants 20 million and 10% of the take. The films don't make enough money to warrant that. I hear James Purefoy is the front runner - I am unfamiliar with him - so he's probably cheap - means more profit - well if anyone goes to see it.
a lot more in this than a Jude Law type. He's been described as the intelligent woman's sex symbol - so how will that go over with the teen/early 20's female populace?"Probably pretty good. Think Timothy Dalton. Young, handsome, able to look realistic in the special effect shots, but he didn't make it as 007 because he was too young. Wasn't there questions about Brosnan because he was too old?
Sex appeal attraction is age irrelevant. We have HD's. At every gathering we see all sorts of combinations of "older" men with (sometimes much) younger women. Looking at these pairings with a mothers eye, its not just the bike that they are attracted to. And how many men in their 40's & 50's have started a second family with a younger wife? LOTS. If a sexy, self assured (but not cocky) man makes even a beautiful woman feel beautiful, think what all those average looking women going to the movies are feeling.
As old as Sean Connery was supposed to be in "First Knight" he was still the ultimate in sexy and I can't think of any current star who will ever surpass his on-screen charm.
Ewan McGregorIf you combine Obi-Wan and his character in Down with Love, I think he could do it. What do you think?
--Jack
Has the requisite degree of inner turmoil and melancholia, as well as a wry smile. More of cross between Sean Connery and James Lazenby. McGregor (nice chap) is just 'too nice'.

He is a natural James Bond. Those car commecials for BMW show him to be the perfect Bond\with a dark side.
Not seen those over here, but I can guess what you mean. Just saw him in 'Croupier' and with a cameo in 'The Bourne Identity'. Think he is great.I believe he is just about to appear in (or has already appeared in - not seen it here in the UK yet) Mike Hodge's 'I'll sleep when I'm dead', who also directed 'Croupier'.

You can download the BMW films here . Be sure to get the season 1 films too, I liked them more than the second season.
It was a good idea picking great directors (Ang Lee, Wong Kar-Wai, Alejandro González Iñárritu, etc) to make mini films/ads all featuring the same character.
i know what you mean about clive owen. i saw him in king arthur, and i think he's definitely an actor to watch out for.timothy dalton never really made a hit with the public with the darker incarnation of the bond character. 007 requires a little cheese like hugh grant. i'm not sure that clide owen could do the duan juan side of 007 justice, and he doesn't have the right look. he'd make a perfect mad genius bond villain, though.
my vote goes to christian bale. he's got the handsome looks and can turn on the 007 charm one minute and do the brooding, dangerous thing the next. he'd have to bulk up, though.
"HO, HO, HO!" - Santa Claus
Can see where you're coming from. I find Bale's presentation a little too 'obvious' or 'action-man-like' for the role though.
Big J.
The girlfriend and I both agree on this...
Although, I don't imagine his stock is at an all-time high after King Arthur (which wasn't his fault.) But he'd make a nice, sexy, broody Bond. In the English press at least, Clive's been touted (along with Ioan Gruffudd) for two or three years.
Jude Law may be the most gorgeous man alive but he's too young. Ioan Gruffudd is gorgeous but he's also too young - revisit these chaps in 10 or so years.Ewan is charming but lacks the air of danger that my ideal Bond would have. Too short, as well. Bond would have to go in a new direction.
Agree. Needs more 'weathering' physically and psycologically.
Big J.
Would be good if they brought the series back to reality where Bond didn't have demi-god powers. IIRC, Bond has light-brown hair and no Scottish burr in the books.
But he wants them to go back to the originals - more character driven less effects - in other words remotely credible alla "On Her Majesty's Secret Service or From Russia With Love. But money talks and They tried this with Daulton in Licence to Kill. And while I thought it worked - I wonder if the studio execs got enough cash.I'd like to see him in this role because he's ~40 a good actor and while the Avengers was a total disaster - there is potential to have his trademark intensity with enough light touch for it to work and he has the intelligence which permeates through his work and in life. He's actually a judge on a panel deciding on the best literature novel of the year.
Frankly, I was happy with Brosnon even if the last film was off.
The first Bond book was all about character and cards. Finnes could do that in spades. Although he comes across as a tad too sensitive to capture the number of women 007 usually does, though.
Ralph would need a more sophisticated Bond girl instead of the HA-HA Onatop kind of two dimensional bimbos. There is much that could be done with James Bond if they look forward and not copy the endless F/X movies. The question is how to make a more sophisticated more credible Bond picture with a non cartoon central character while not alienating Bond fans.
As much as I like to say I'd like a High Brow Bond my favorite actual film of the series was The Spy Who Loved Me. I like Connery Best the Dalton.
I had such high hopes for the Avengers because I felt there was more to work with - a sassy sexual tension with TWO crime fighters and there was usually some quirky story. With Fiennes, Uma and Connery how could it go so wrong - American Writers and money ruined that one and the worst script of the year.
But Fiennes had a light touch in Strange Days - one of the best films of 1995 IMO.
Ralph Fiennes crossed my mind too. The guy is a chameleon: he can act so well. I didn't think he would work as an action star though--but, indeed, if they would go back to the basic gist of the books, he would be great.
--Jack
I get the impression he needs a character to work with. His role in Maid in Manhatten was a flop largely because he was playing a two dimensional chracter and had no clue what to do with it(nothing could be done other than to smile and dote on Lopez). But you know he's too smart so it doesn't fly.But he's been very good for the most part other than that film - even in "A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia" he was very good."
He would probably be closer to a Dalton type Bond but a bit lighter - and that IMO would be a good thing.
