Thanks for the information. An 1898 setting could be very interesting- a greater contrast in Earth/Mars technologies. I think Spielberg would avoid the kind of distracting anachronmisms of "League of Extraodinary Gentlemen". The car looked like a 1987 glassfibre 1935 retro kit car with picture frame mouldings glued on it.
Reproducing old technologies and avoiding the temptation to update from a position of hindsight is very difficult and rarely well done. The English are better at it as so many scripts are still written in rooms without heating- and wiring from 1912.

If they stay true to the book then unfortunately, Richard Burton isn't around to do the voice-over for the main character as he did on Jeff Wayne's double-album production of War Of The Worlds. Too bad.
And, I do hope the production team spends a LOT of time on the scenes with Thunderchild.

I vaguely remember a B$W British version of War of the Worlds, that was more faithfull to the original book.
