Skarsgaard's Nordic intensity was put to good use here. Too bad the script and direction weren't. This was a mildly entertaining prequel that could never expect live up to the original, but that's okay. The cinematography and art direction was commendable. Plus, the unsual look of the film was interesting with sepia tones to denote its "past tense" and blue tones denoting "evil afoot".There wasn't anything particularly horrifying about the film despite the quick cuts accompanied by crescendos hoping to get a jolt out of the viewer. In fact, despite the cheapshots and substandard CGIs, the film was rather restrained hoping to survive on tension.
