Some refreshing picks on this list, not alot of Hollywood tripe. It's a novel idea. Science fiction film picks from actual scientists. Screened Blade Runner just last night, I still enjoy it as a film that made an impression on me in my youth, but doesn't match the artistry of '2001', IMO.
How about indie directors pick their 10 ten films? I'd like to see what Jim Jarmusch would offer up.

Follow Ups:
=)
others were Stars Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Alien, Solaris(1972),
The Terminator, Terminator 2, The Day The Earth Stood Still, War Of
The Worlds, The Matrix and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. I
was surprised the original Metropolis and Forbidden Planet didn't make it on the list, IMO, they could have easily bumped off Terminator 2 and The Matrix. ~AH
Agree and 2001 would have been first on my list.
Tarkovsky's Solaris, go to:
Boo.
Big J.
...until the end. The dreamy planet scene really ruined it for me to be honest. Otherwise a very well put together, enjoyable and unique movie.
I didn't think it was too bad, but I know what you mean. I have sympathy for the director though as I imagine it must have been difficult to portray the unknown and garner a sense of awe in the process (the 'wormhole slingshot' effects were pretty exciting and tough to trump). One of my favourite sci-fi flicks for the fact that it seems set in the very near future (or alternate now) and keeps psudo-science and fancy 'tech' stuff to a minimum.
Big J.
.
I assume they are referring to the director's cut, not the voiceover one with the happy ending.
I prefered the one with the voice-over. Largely. Not because of its " good ending " but for other reasons.
The director was not happy with " The directors cut " neither!
Letīs wait for the third version.
I gotta agree with you Patrick, I like the voice over version as well...I have both versions on laserdisc, and the VO version just seems more "right" to me...and gives the film a much more neo-noir feel imo.Regards,
Gary
