Lomg a fan of this 1974 adaptation of the Fitzgerald classic, I awaited its laserdisc release which, alas, never came. It was finally released last December on DVD in anamorphic widescreen and
remastered Dolby 5.1 sound. It stars Robert Redford and Mia Farrow and has an elegent screenplay by Franci Ford Coppolla. Sam Waterston, Karen Black, and Bruce Dern have supporting roles. The film captures the essense of the novel and IMHO is far better than the version released a few yesrs ago.
Follow Ups:
there was very little chemistry between Farrow and Redford. I have always yearned for a version that lives up to the novel...
make a worthy modern remake. I watched the old version several times and it's great, but there are some quirky "old" stuff that could be more polished. Put in some real money, get some real actors, screenwriters, and I would gladly pay my $ to see it in theaters..
Interesting. I was very disappointed with the 1974 release as it paled in comparision to the novel. I didn't realize that there was a more recently released film - you say this newer version is inferior to the 1974 movie?
I thyought so but maybe I was swayed by my fondness for the '74 version. The newer one came out in 2001, I think. I may revisit it to make sure what I posted was correct insofar as my opinion is concerned.
