patrickU,Certainly a wonderful movie- as you say quite atypical for Hitchcock- probably his "quietest". The angst of the wrongly accused Fonda is so finely wrought as he tries to protect his family from the fear and humiliation of the accusation and look into a potential doom he doesn't deserve with fortitude. Even the police are shown in am interesting way that seems incidental at first, but whuch is criticval to the subtle writing. That is they are depicted in a very sypathetic, kind way - which for me heightens the tension. The magic of the sympathetic police is that Hitchcock leaves us no villain to hate and wish defeated- and we are left to concentrate on the vagaries of fate!
The quiet calm of Fonda is almost spooky in itself - a kind of glassy eyed bewilderment.
Certainement je souhaite que tous les nous puissent avoir ce calme pendant l'adversite.
Salut,
Follow Ups:
Bonjour Bambi B!At some point his wife ( played so intensively by Miles ) thinks he may be culprit, that make him even more alone, and that is finely ciseled by Fonda.
Not entirely agreeing with the police, Hitch is even better than that! Remember the scene in the courtoom where the attorney citing the police deposition about things that he never told in this context?
Suddendly a "correct " police look more like Kafka and " Der Prozess "....
Calme...Il est musicien...C´est surement un avantage....
tho' Fonda is great as always and the soundtrack is excellent, like most jazz from that eraGrins
